Rosalinde for a New Generation

In a post last week, Cherry Kay of Entertaining Women included a wonderful phrase about family dishes passed down to her:  "I am blessed to shepherd them for a season."  I love the image that evokes of enjoying and caring for family treasures, then passing them on to others.  Last weekend we were in Houston to celebrate my father-in-law's 88th birthday and to see my grandchildren in a church musical.  I took the opportunity to play with my daughter's dishes, starting with the beautiful Haviland china in the Rosalinde pattern passed down to her by her paternal grandparents.  Our plan was to set a modern-looking table with this vintage china pattern.

We started with bright green chargers my daughter found at Crate and Barrel.  The rippled chargers echo the plates' scalloped edges and bring out the green in the pattern.

The Gorham Chantilly silver was also passed down from the same grandparents.  They had an extensive collection, because they frequently hosted dinner parties for their university colleagues and friends, so the silver was divided between my daughter and my son.  I contributed the pink napkins, bought on clearance at Macy's recently.

Here's a closeup of the delicate china pattern.  My in-laws collected both American and French versions, which differ slightly, but both include the gold rim. I believe the French-made pattern has a cream-colored rim.

And one of the silver pattern...

The crystal also came from her grandparents, but is of more recent vintage.

Here's an attempt at a bird's eye view.  The silver metal vases and crystal candlesticks are my daughter's.

Pretty pink petals!

Here's a look at the whole table.  The bright chargers, simple flowers, and the bare table lend a modern feel to this pretty vintage china.

Thank you for stopping by!  I hope you will leave a comment before you leave to visit all the wonderful tablescapes at Susan's Between Naps on the Porch!

  1. Hi Tricia,

Rosalinde is such a beautiful pattern. It's easy to see why it was one of Haviland's biggest success stories. You've done a great job of incorporating a wonderfully old-fashioned pattern into a fresh, clean, modern table setting. I love the timeless look of vintage pieces mixed with new/modern ones. It gives a table a great sense of personal style. Nicely done! I'll venture to say your daughter was delighted with what you did. I'm sure your readers will be!

Hope the rest of your week goes well.

  4. Tricia, I think you did a great job of making old china and silverware feel fresh and young! I especially LOVE that silverware. I have Gorham too but I chose a very plain pattern and often wish for a little bit of squiggle. Hope you had a wonderful time with your family. Linda

  8. I absolutely love that pattern and think it's really stunning and different against that green charger. It blends the old and new perfectly. I love what you quoted (and Cherry Kay said) about shepherding dishes. That's exactly how I feel, and I'm so very grateful that it's how my mother and grandmother's felt too.

Such a lovely table!! I know that playing dishes with your daughter was the best part, though, wasn't it?

  18. Tricia --
This is my very most cherished pattern of my many dishes. My paternal grandmother gave me hers for a wedding present. She had several other grandaughters, but she said I was meant to have it since her name was Rose and mine is Linda. It's probably one of the most feminine and graceful patterns ever made, and I love the way you moderized it!

  20. I appreciate the mention at the beginning of your post. One of the reasons that I want to blog is to encourage others to take those magnificent family china patterns, that all too often have been languishing in a dark closet, and use them. I adore that you have passed the joy of the creative pleasure of tablescaping on to your daughter. I've long admired the 'Rosalinde." She is so blessed to have an entire service. I have no doubt that her grandmother was smiling as you all lovingly laid the table. Ooooh...how I wish that we had a Crate & Barrel here. If God looked kindly on it, I would covet those marvelous green chargers. They were the perfect complement for your antique china tablescape with a modern twist. Well done! The crystal added the perfect spot of bling, and I thoroughly enjoyed your design. I'm glad that you stopped by for a visit. Come often, please! Thank you for sharing your daughter's beautiful family treasures with us. Cherry Kay

  21. You and Cherry Kay may be inspiration to us all to use what has been given us from earlier generations. Certainly such hold memories. I hope your daughter knows the story of her lovely pieces.

  22. How pretty!
The green chargers look so young and fresh, but they still enhance the china.

I linked to the same party, and I am now a follower.

  26. Thank you so much for posting this, Tricia. The china is beautiful and the table is perfect. My husband had a set of china from his grandma which he passed on to his daughter and we could not find the name of the pattern of the china. I believe they look just like this. I sent your blog to my stepdaughter to check it out and compare the patterns...Christine

  36. OK, first of all I love the name of your blog. Cracked me up.

I was not fortunate enough to have had any china passed on to me nor was I exposed to beautiful patterns growing up. To say I'm a late bloomer would be an understatement. I am trying to make up for it now as I've turned into a dishaholic.

Your mix of old and new is so pretty, sometimes we tend toward theme tables rather than just enjoying the perfection of a beautiful place settings. Your tablescape is an example that many times less is more. Thanks for sharing your beautiful tablescape and your daughters china of love handed down.

  41. What beautiful dishes and you accomplished what you set out to do - give the old a more modern look. I am very sentimental and old things mean a lot to me. What a treasure for your daughter to have.
